Under a recent study, five Towns in Suffolk County have found that more than half of ticks sampled tested positive for Lyme Disease.

The Town of Shelter Island & East Hampton come in at the highest infection rate of 66%. Huntington came in at 62%, Islip at 56%, & Babylon at 50%.

The remaining Towns came in lower. Riverhead comes in at 42%, Brookhaven comes in at 36%, Southold at 43%, & Smithtown at 32%.

The County is urging residents take precautions and to protect themselves from tick borne illnesses. The tick sampled was the black legged tick.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services said that a letter was sent from the Commissioner of Health Services to all medical practitioners in Suffolk County advising them to consider tick-borne diseases when diagnosing patients.
